Review-in-brief: NewsFire succeeded by Vienna

I’ve been using NewsFire to manage my RSS feeds for… well, as long as I’ve been using RSS. That developer just ‘gets it’ about the interface, as far as I’m concerned. It’s sexy and easy to use.

But there have been problems. For about as long as I’ve been using it, there have been certain feeds that just don’t work — no error messages, nothing, they just don’t update no matter what. It only affects a small number of feeds; I think it has to do with an inability to deal with malformed HTML in the feed.

I’ve had enough. I’ve switched to Vienna 2. It’s more or less an open source version of NewsFire, with a few notable differences. I had tried it back when I was first evaluating RSS readers, and I think it’s come a long way since then.

I give it my “It Actually Works Like It’s Suppose To, That’s Amazing!” Award.

Edit: After using Vienna for a little longer, I admit that I’m underwhelmed. A comparison between a large number of Mac OS X RSS readers is in the works.
