Notes on Cuba

August 4th, 2006

From the CIA World Factbook:

  • Cuba has a comparable life expectancy to the US, both lower than Canada’s.
  • Cuba has a slightly lower infant mortality rate than the US, both higher than Canada’s.
  • Cuba has a slighly lower literacy rate than Canada and the US.
  • Cuba has a much lower unemployment rate than the US, both lower than Canada’s.
  • Cuba has significantly fewer telephone lines and cell phones per person than the US and Canada. Whatever that means.
  • In Cuba, “private citizens are prohibited from buying computers or accessing the Internet without special authorization.” Obviously not true in Canada or the US.
  • Canada grows weed, the US is the world’s largest consumer of cocaine, and Cuba has the death penalty for certain drug-related crimes. Go figure.

I’m not really sure why I find this so interesting.
