MS Word Autocorrect

Of all products and ideas to come out of Redmond, “autocorrect” is up there in my most hated. It’s sitting right beside Clippy. Autoformatting, too, but it’s not quite as evil.

Why do I dislike autocorrection? Two reasons. First, I like being aware of my mistakes – it’s the only way one can improve. Autocorrect trains users to just mash the keyboard instead of learning to type properly, increasing one’s reliance on autocorrect and decreasing one’s ability to type in applications that are lacking it. Second, if I typed “prp18″ instead of “Prp18″ there’s probably a good reason. I find myself re-correcting every entry in my table (prompting this little rant). I honestly think autocorrect is a waste of time that causes more typos than it fixes.

If I hate it so much, why not just turn it off? Actually, I do have it turned off, excepting smart quotes and “1st” to “1st“. So why is it still “correcting” my capitalization? Hell if I know!

I feel like strangling someone…

Edit: I figured out how to turn it off! As autocorrect does its thing, click on the little blue line that appears and select “Turn this dumbass feature off.” It’s not in the “autocorrect” options because it’s specific to tables, I gather. How frustrating.
