Alive and in Kingston

I got back into the city on Labour Day, and I’ve been busy ever since. Most of my time has been sent sitting in the Goat, working on med school applications. I think they make the application process as painful and tedious as possible in order to weed out those who don’t want it. By far the biggest pain is tracking down people to verify every single employment, volunteer service, and extracurricular activity that I want them to consider. An example of my problem is that the one thing that I can definitely call volunteer work was for an organisation that has since changed management and moved locations. Hopefully they’ve kept their log books from four years ago.

The annual Frosh Week Sidewalk Sale was last Friday. Since I’m in town and on three execs, I spent 8:30am to 5pm rotating between three booths. It was hot, humid, and mostly breeze-less, and everyone was gross and sweaty. I got to see old friends I haven’t seen in a while, but the hugs were a little damper than I would have liked. It’s good to be back.

I uploaded the photos from my trip to the Pasayten Wilderness to Facebook. If I get around to putting some up on my photo album, I’ll drop a message here.

Last Wednesday, I decided to become a morning person. I’ve been up at 7am every day since. Is it just to see if I can? Partly. But it’s mostly because I want to survive this year with health, mind, and marks intact, and this is the only realistic way to accomplish it. Here’s the deal: alarm goes off, I hop out of bed and into my running shoes. After the run I shower and eat breakfast, and I can be in the lab or class by 8:30am. Since I want to attend every single class this year, that’s a very important part. Between and after classes, I’m in the lab, working and studying. Around suppertime I go home, cook supper, and work or relax until my 11:30pm bedtime. This is the plan.

It doesn’t leave a lot of room for the people in my life, especially those running on a more nocturnal schedule. It’s made even worse by the fact that I’ll be doing this on weekends, too, so late-night partying is out. I’m thinking maybe I should give myself one night a week where I can ignore my bedtime and just go wild! We’ll see.
